Breakout & Byplay

Game log for the 2012/06/07 session of 7th Sea: The Search for Salvation, as taken by Jason

So, we have a surrendered Inquisitor and a significant dearth of notions about what to do next. Nikolai, absent orders to the contrary, begins binding the captive. Felix, deprived of the chance to kill more people, goes to apologize to Janisse Rambeaux for leaving her in harm's way, explaining that surrendering to the Inquisition would have left them all under Alonso Mendez de Gallegos del Castille's power, instead of just the one. He then asks Benito if we're allowed to take the Inquisitor's money. Benito wishes to curtail all further sinning against the Church, so he orders Felix to desist. Felix therefore tries to make more trouble by asking Léon why Benito cares so much for the opinion of "this pig." The grown-ups ignore Felix and Benito asks Nikolai to make Alonso go unconscious without hurting him too badly, so the hulking guy with the wrestling skills chokes out our new least favorite Castile.

We collectively decide to steal transportation and get the hell out of here, back to Malaca. Except that Felix (accompanied by Léon) can't resist the urge to go looking for Mia, but he finds out she's down in the store room. He writes her a note, then runs really fast to the courtyard, with a few shouts urgently behind. While they waited, the rest got horses for us and set the rest free. Our crimes include theft of a cart, which slows us down a lot because nobody has any experience as a cart driver. Felix volunteers to drive so he can make time with Janisse. We ride to Malaca and never see anyone behind us... until, as we approach the city, we hear the howling of wolves behind us. Felix, driven by his inchoate crush on Janisse and the memory of horrible monsters in the forests of Eisen, suddenly has the horses running like Thera's best chariot horses. The rest follow as best they can, with Benito in the rear. In fact, they gain on Benito pretty quickly. Our fearless leader decides that he's rather run his stolen horse to death than get et by wolves, so he gives it the spurs. The horse responds and gains back a little ground, but it is being chased by wolves that teleport. That makes ordinary speed sort of irrelevant. Benito opens fire with his pistols to help discourage them, and knocks two out of the chase. That leaves one in hot pursuit. Nikolai slows down to help Benito, whose horse finds a new burst of speed. As a result, the wolf ends up chasing the Ussuran instead. Oops. Then again, what does Nikolai care? He at least has the sense to keep riding rather than trying to wrestle a wolf, and the chase continues, with the wolf eventually catching him and going for the horse. Luckily, that wolf seems to have tremendous speed but poor aim. Wolves in snapping range also blunder into axing range, but Nikolai also has trouble with his aim, which is hardly surprising when he's swinging at a black wolf at night from the back of a galloping horse. With another (terrified) burst of the strength, the horse opens a little distance, and the wolf gives up the chase. Nikolai, knowing he and Benito expended their horses, gives them humane deaths. Benito searches the saddlebags of his horse, which appears to be Alonsos, and finds twine and an iron nail, along with various oddments. Benito declines to steal the wine, thinking such petty crimes beneath him, so Felix steals it instead. Léon praises Felix's driving skills, while Felix and Nikolai trade mercenary proverbs. "It's better to be lucky than good." "Never be slowest rider."

We make our way to the docs, all those poor innocent townsfolk having no idea that crazed heretical killers of Inquisitors walk amongst them. We go to an inn to get off the strees, allowing Reginald time to write some letters to his "penpal", Romeo Fuente, although Reginald knows him only as El Rojo, and to a rival, to whom he sends directions to the ruins. He does, however, include a warning that there may be Inquisitors at the ruin.

Benito, Reginald, and Nikolai sell one of the horses from the cart, but while doing so, they see men in red tabards kicking in the door of an inn. We may have set a new record for shortest welcome soonest overstayed. Time to get a ship. Actually, two hours ago was time to get a ship. There's only one good choice docked, a Vendel vessel. For lyrical purposes, the log wishes it was viridian and coated in verdigris, but it isn't. Anyway, they go back to the room to get the rest of the group, then head to the docs.

As we look around, we notice that one of the people who looks like a fisherman is actually a crewman from Evelina's ship. Nikolai gets his attention and tells the rest of the group that we may be among friends. Yep, the guy the "fisherman" is talking to turns out to be Good Lindsay. They complain that they've been waiting a long time for us. We head for their boat. Lindsay makes a lecherous advance on Janisse, which causes Nikolai to mutter "pirate", which in turn forces to Felix to confirm their dastardly nature for his new favorite lady. We board the ship, finding Evelina Venzini di Sigillo and Mercede Panebianchi di Vestini on board, along with their children. Reginald walks around the boat to take it all in, noting all its clever piratey features. Time to get the hell out of here, off to the west.

The ship sets sail while Reginald and Evelina get acquainted. It turns out that Evelina has known Mia for years. As Léon says, the globe is too small. It's OK, though, because if Nikolai gets a little bigger, he'll be able to just grab it and stretch it out a bit. Anyway, the nobles and Nikolai regale the sisters with our adventures, which tale astonishes them. As they discuss possible options, Léon admits his true name.
