Palace coup, with attendant injuries

Game log for the 2026/01/18 session of Fellowship - The Clockwork Prince, as taken by Jason

Vestrum is maybe not entirely in the dungeon, but his room is dry, cold, austere, and locked. It's a day before anyone comes to see him, and when they do, it's Prince Gaznar, with servants bearing a lavish repast. The Prince and Vestrum confer, and Vestrum complains bitterly that his imprisonment is illegal and demonstrates the King's flawed judgement.

General Hazmadar comes to the rooms where the rest of the Fellowship are staying and asks to speak to Geria. He wants her to fight under Azadar's banner, rallying the unaligned among Tarsyna to fight against the Clockwork Prince. She accepts, hoping that many will change sides when they discover that they have the choice. Hazmadar mentions that the Dwarves may march soon, with just one Colossus, to make sure they strike the first blow. He tells the Fellowship to ready themselves to march in three days. Geria indicates that it won't happen without Vestrum. General Hazmadar departs.

Once the Fellowship have privacy, Raatma immediately urges the group to demand Vestrum's freedom, or else seize it. Geria and Baldric goes to talk to King Azadar. Bulgarath, Tanis, and Raatma attempt to see Vestrum.

Vestrum's suite in the deep cells is of course guarded, and the Fellowship are recognized immediately. The guard has no orders to allow visitors, and no particular desire to allow any. The guard says maybe they'd like to wait for him to go off shift, in three days. He prides himself on how long he can stay awake. Tanis demonstrates that he's actually quite tired and needs to go to sleep immediately. The three of them walk on past the guard, verify that the cell is locked, and set Vestrum free. They begin walking to the throne room.

King Azadar seems happy to see Geria, but he's fairly committed to keeping Vestrum locked up. He's had these curious visions, you see... but he'll release Vestrum if Geria will ride with him at the head of the host. He asks her to approach, that they might seal their pact. Bulgarath uses his magic to whisper in Baldric's ear that Vestrum is free. He immediately asks her to hold so he can whisper this news in her ear. She suggests to the King that he'll need time to write out the terms, and she'll wait in her chambers.

Bulgarath, Raatma, Tanis, and Vestrum decide to go see Baron Ulgnor, trying to pick the less-used passages, and smells some guards just a little before she rounds the corner. The estate was under surveillance, and now three sturdy dwarves are charging the miscreants who freed Vestrum. The first guard sends Vestrum flying, and when he finally comes to a stop, he's unconscious and bleeding from the head. That really angers Raatma, and in three shakes of an orc's broken axe, she's killed them all.

When Vestrum knocks on the Baron's door, his servant yanks them inside, muttering about getting inside before we're seen. The Baron thinks it may already be too late, but he won't move without conferring with the Prince. Vestrum thinks they won't have time for that, so he and the Fellowship go to work while the Baron and Prince get their heads together.

Baron Ulgnor sees Geria in the Citadel and tells them that Vestrum is fine, and they may want to come with him to see the Prince. Once they're together, the Baron tells Prince Gaznar that it's time to depose his father. The Prince is not ready for this moment.

The direct action group are headed for the Colossus. They meet with some guards and prepare for the worst, but the guards haven't been told of Vestum's arrest, so in the event, the gang just walks on past, looking for the right place. Captain Vleng escorts them personally. Vestrum starts trying to sound him out, and figures that while the Captain won't take sides, he thinks leading the dwarven host would be good for the Prince, helping to establish his legitimacy. When they get to the right spot, Vestrum says it would be a pity if something happened in the tunnel there, and Tanis does some Elven nerve pinch mojo on him.

Raatma and Vestrum identify the right place to aim the junk cannon in the passage, and the junk cannon triggers a collapse in the ore seam they were originally following when they dug this tunnel. 200 yards of tunnel fall down.

The Prince and the King are arguing when there's a very tactile thud. The Prince is telling the King that he's playing into the Clockwork Prince's hands, the King is yelling that the Prince is a traitor. The two humans begin looking for an escape route, and someone fires a crossbow. Baldric tries to leap out a stained glass window, but he's not strong enough to break the window. Instead, he bounces back into the path of a crossbow bolt. There's a dwarf running at Geria, so she draws her sword and keeps him at bay long enough for something to distract him, and then she hauls Baldric to his feet. She tells him that if the King wins, Taryna loses, and Balrdic says she has his sword. A member of the King's guard says he knew it was a mistake to let humans talk to the Prince, and attacks Geria. Baldric interposes himself and keeps the guard busy, while Geria finishes him off. Another guard throws an axe at her, and she ducks under it, then moves in on him. Baldric tries to follow up and do away with him, but the guard is able to stab Baldric with a dagger from his offhand, then reverse and clock Geria. Baldric tries to press him, using his height advantage, but the dwarf gets in under his guard and stabs him again, while Geria parries furiously. Baldric loses the next exchange as well, and Geria notices he is looking decidedly the worse for wear. She tries to get the guard's attention to buy time for Baldric, and gets stabbed for her troubles. This guy has figured out the way Geria and Baldric fight together, and he's abke to exploit their timing. Geria uses that to her advantage by telling Baldric to step back. The Dwarf thinks this is her chance, but when she refuses to give ground this time, he's caught off balance, and she kicks him firmly in the chest, then plants a foot on him, pinning him in place. The Prince's guard, meanwhile, has carried the day and has the King surrounded.

The other part of the Fellowship carry Captain Vleng to his men, and tell them they rescued the Captain from a cave-in. They run back toward the Citadel, and encounter word of fighting in the throne room on the way. There are guards who will not admit us nor give us tidings. We confer briefly, and then Tanis uses his elven magic to ask Geria whether everything is OK. Geria is able to magically inform him that the Prince is in charge now. They conclude that things are looking good for our side, and return to their assigned quarters so that Vestrum can gear up again.

Eventually Count Ulgnor sends for them, and brings them into the company of the Prince, who is a little shell-shocked. Geria seems tired, Baldric wrecked. Bulgarath gives him a small vial and tells him to drink it. Vestrum speaks to the Elders and convinces them to back the Prince, but they insist that he must help them activate the Colossus - not to invade Tarsyna, but to be ready when the time comes. We have earned the fellowship of the Dwarves.
