The Way It Went Down

Game log for the 2024/04/29 session of AW:The City Never Sleeps, as taken by Joe

Knell strummed his guitar and the world changed. For most people, witnessing this is a first. People are still crowding the VIP box to talk with the Mayor when shit got weird.

Twiggy tried to stop Knell's performance, but he is completely unplugged and unstoppable. Twiggy assaults Knell, the Stooges rush the stage. The crowd is mixed, some are running and others are enjoying the trip. Knell continues the show.

Frost does some ninja shit and escapes but Aurora, who is trying to follow her, isn't as limber and swings down on a cable that is slowly detaching itself from the ceiling. She catches up with Frost and they're outside. Reunited, they run for Aurora's jeep, which has changed colors and hopefully nothing else.

Skip is in the press of a crowd, he's knocked down but manages to get back up and swim with the flow of the crowd. The distances keep elongating but we finally get out and he's lost Suplex in the process.

Knell and some supporters get the Stooges to back off. At the same time, Twiggy is trying to extricate the Mayor and Shelly from the press of the crowd. He pulls his pistol, is rushed, but manages to keep it together and hold on to his pistol. He gets in to see them but their escape is confused by the shifting reality. Eventually, they succeed through the Getaway's tunnels.

Outside, Shelly wants to get back to Starbucks, but the Mayor is focused on bigger issues. They get to the Starbucks and the Mayor grabs Twiggy for a convo in the walkout. The Mayor knows that the situation is getting worse.

Back at the Getaway, people are escaping and MacWillard is helping. Skip comes out with the crowd and helps direct them to the Market to clear the area. Skip tries to interview Frost, who is trying to get back into the Getaway. Jones knocks him out of the way and Frost gets through and searches for her gun.

She's frustrated that the gun-check is gone. She searches, but it is not there. Making it out, she commiserates with Aurora and they both go looking for new weapons.

Meanwhile, Mac is treating wounded when Shelly and the Mayor show up. They point out the Change is happening more frequently and in real-time. The Mayor's calling an emergency meeting of City Council and leaves. Mac and Shelly talk about city politics, but Mac is constrained by the need to keep confidences.

Twiggy hints that Lollipop might be able to help, but Shelly is skeptical. In the background, Knell jams on. By midnight, his 10 most hardcore fans remain. These are Knell's Angels.

The Getaway continues to morph in time and space. Jones finds the gun check and frees a panicking Marley. They load what they can into crates but Marley can't believe that she saw the Change. They manage to escape.

Frost and Aurora, frustrated head to Stoichkopf's place. Frost wants something big but Stoichkopf sells her something bigger and more stylish. They make a mutually beneficial deal. Aurora also rearms.

At Joe's Crab Shack, the talk is nothing but the Change. Frost compares notes with Jones. Somewhere else, Twiggy searches for Lollipop but finds Marley and a much altered Getaway. He tries to pump up the Stooges but has to rein in Knell's ego.

Later, the Stooges bring Lollipop to Twiggy, but it isn't a happy reunion. Lollipop helps Marley but tells Twiggy that he's a dick, but still she compliments his efforts to reform the Getaway. It's a tender, sappy moment. Her conversation with Shelly and Mac doesn't go as smoothly, as she's full of existential idealism. There's a cliche-ridden menage a'trois conversation about dreamers and dreams. Shelly isn't buying any of it and no one else is budging on their beliefs. Mac tries to explain what he learned during his expedition to the Spire but the others are dismissive.

The next day, someone comes to Shaq Towers to talk with Skip. Thomas comes to tell Skip the "story of the century". He has a video from Starbucks' walk-in that has the whole conversation. Skip offers a barter for the tape, but Thomas wants five. Thomas leaves disappointed, but Skip has recorded everything.
