Session 0: Getting to Know You

Game log for the 2022/01/9 session of MotW:Quoth the Raven, as taken by Joe

The setting is 2019 at a small rural college in Texas. East Texas University is in Pinebox, Texas. Their academic speciality is archeology and they maintain a substantial, if poorly curated, collection of Meso-American, central, and southwestern American native artifacts. All of the players have a link to ETU and are now “townies.”

The tone of the campaign is light and hopefully a bit whacky, like Buffy the Vampire Slayer or “Scooby Doo with fucking guns.” One line quips and bon mots are required!

When a character tries to do something, they describe what effect they want to achieve and how they are approaching the situation. If they are using a playbook move, they then state which one. If they are not using a playbook move, the GM determines which basic move is being invoked and the player rolls.

All players can use magic. If they want to use magic, their description of the effect and its cause should lean heavily on “the old black magic.” The GM might apply a constraint in terms of time or materials and then the player rolls for effect.

Sammy Smith (the Divine, played by JackO) appears to be a mid-60s black man who works as an Uber driver. He’s a known character in Pinebox, but his celestial mission is to guide Damien to complete his destiny. He often goes to Chet for advice on mortals and their lives, as Chet is the most mortal person he feels he can talk to. He thinks that Jacob should not be involved in the supernatural and that Sougand is an abomination that he cannot destroy for some reason. -- Why shouldn’t Jacob be involved? -- Why can’t he destroy Sougand? What kind of abomination is Sougand? -- Read Sandman Slim by Richard Kadrey

Jacob Westmeijer (the Flake, played by Selnaric) is an internet conspiracy master and entrepreneur. He’s keeping an eye on Sammy. He is Chet’s first cousin and Sougand is a colleague. Damien is a fellow believer and contributes to Jacob’s researches. -- We discussed Jacob having ties to the ETU museum and faculty as a result of a former posting there. His professorship ended when ETU discovered that his degrees were from an online diploma mill in Wyoming, but he still knows people. Thoughts?

Chet Granderson (the Mundane, played by Munin) was introduced to monsters by Jacob. He is suspicious of Sammy. He saved Damien from a werewolf once and is sougand’s half-brother. What is his day job? Was he between jobs or working at the Pizza Barn? -- If he’s between jobs, having a temp gig working for ETU (in like facilities or the athletic department) would be helpful. Or he might have a new day job each session?

Sougand Quill (the Spooky, played by Jay) knows Jacob but keeps him at an emotional distance. He is related to Chet and is Damien’s friend. He hopes that Sammy can help him control his powers. Sougand presently works for 50 cents an hour above minimum wage at the Pizza Barn. -- What is Sougand’s power?

Damien Dumas (the Wronged, played by Lisa) was helped by Chet. He goes to Jacob for information and was taught to fight by Sammy. Sougand saw him lose his shit as Damien discovered his brother had been turned into a werewolf. Damien’s subsequent assault of some police officers resulted in some criminal charges that remain on Damien’s record.
