Momentary Watch

Game log for the 2020/12/14 session of Impulse Drive: Stormlight, as taken by Jacko

The crew heads for the warehouse with a quickness to get some more loot from departed Vinnie Star before his gang knows the deal is on. Franco is ready to do some technical wizardry when Kyruss simply blasts the door and the shooting starts. There's only a couple of mooks babysitting the warehouse and Ember telekinetically floated one as a screaming clay pigeon for Kyruss while Drix blasted the other. Soon enough, the cargo inside was theirs for the picking.

Franco did some recon in the comptuer system in the office. Transaction records show Gorgrains did a lot of business with Vinnie Star but Vinnie has never tried to stiff him, not once. Out of character. Gorgrains mostly deals with contraband tech. Jericho, one of the Long Watchman, was being fed false info from Vinnie.

Janus was quickly sorting through the cargo in the warehouse knowing time was of the essence. She was able to find some cheap goods that were easily transportable but the clock was ticking and the crew decided getting to Tiberius sooner was better than later. They boarded the Stormlight and took off for Tiberius.

Kyruss found Franco reviewing some computer files while the ship was in drill space and the bounty hunter wondered aloud how they could get the rest of the crew on board with upgrading their equipment so their skills could be more fully utilized. Franco thought the crew would be amenable and realize that what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Drix visited Ember in her quarters with some tea, intent on providing some guidance and perhaps some peace but the rebellious teen wasn't having and sent him on his way with a 'Kick me' sign on his back. Kyruss eventually followed the directive and indeed kicked him. Later, in the mess, Kyruss proposed that the crew purchase an electronic kit to increase their chances to hack and crack security systems.

The crew wasn't swayed by wiggling mandibles and a rambling, circuitous speech. Franco found Drix in his quarters later and asked him about Jericho, curious about the man. Drix knows the man, he was part of the cabal that forced Drix into sabbatical. If Jericho is around Hole In One space, his dead drop would be at Asrir.

THE STORY OF JERICHO Jericho refused to allow a colonist station protection of a Long Watch convoy because they couldn't pay him his "gift." They travel to Corinth. On the return voyage, however, the Agamemnon encountered Medea’s Dream adrift in the space lane. Drix’s ship was tasked to investigate and he found that pirates had breached the hull, venting the atmosphere into space and asphyxiating the crew and passengers before boarding and looting the little vessel.

Upon returning to the Agamemnon, Drix openly questioned the Commissar’s decision to leave the defenseless ship unprotected. He asked his fellow wardens why the Temple should place profit above the value of human life, intimating that the decision was contrary to the Code’s dictate to protect the weak. In short order, he was taken to a quiet part of the carrier and interrogated by several of his brothers in a sort of informal court martial. He did not deny his comments, nor that he felt the judgement went against the Code. By the time he returned to his quarters, he received a message informing him that his actions were contrary to the “good order and discipline” of the Agamemnon and that he was “excused from his command so that he might have time to reflect upon his actions while free from distraction.”

Cast out of the shelter of the Watch, Drix has wandered while looking for some new purpose that can give his life the meaning it once had.

MEANWHILE...

The Stormlight arrives at Tiberius and the welcome is chilly, to say the least. Robed Long Watchmen are waiting for the crew and appear to be intent on finding Ember. Brother Strekred and his bro-migos are waiting for at the end of the ramp when Kyruss, Drix and Janus lead Kyruss' bounty off the ship. The brothers demand to see 'the monster' Ember and show them an old pic. Drix feigns ignorance and Janus contends there's no one on board.

Drix steps forward, knowing that the brothers may take his word better, and lies that Ember is not on the ship. Strekred seems to see right through him and looks put out that Drix would lie. Janus eventually relents and allows the brothers on board while Kyruss turns in his bounty. They find no one, of course (not even Franco), and leave with a note of warning to Drix.

The crew isn't very flush with cash, their cheap goods not being worth much, but they have enough walking around money. They head to the bar, minus Franco and Ember. The hot topic is that the Singing Palm Mining Ltd is having some major labor issues in Poileps as the miners are arming themselves and not being generally miner-ly. Agge Vellinga is another topic of note, he's a fixer who's extending his reach and there's talk his offices could be ripe for the taking if some heisters were interested.

The crew reassembles on the ship and discusses their options. Franco puts forth the Jericho situation but the crew seems inclined to support the miners in their rebellion. There's some discussion about motivations, mostly around Janus, but the crew decides to go forward. The gun supplier they're working for is Yiki, one of the Threel, a short race with wide eyes and nervous hands that have a hairy fringe that tends to click and chatter. He's a smooth talker and seems relaxed and he's happy to do business with Janus.

Janus decides to find Drix while the crew's in drill space. She's curious why the Long Watch wants Ember dead so badly. Drix mentions how genetic modification is heresy in their eyes. She's monstrous. Of course, Drix sees something of himself in her since he now has some of that power and he'll do his best to watch out for her.

Drix finds Ember and offers to help her find out her past, where she came from, and he seems earnest enough about it despite her reluctance. Kyruss decides to tinker with his pistol and turn it into a more holdout configuration, though it might get a little... explody.
