Theme song: Johnny Cash - Ain’t no grave
Eight days later, we post up in Sparta. I’m three riders short (Meatloaf, Colson, and Sabatini) but I’ve got no time to worry about that. Meatloaf, one of my old timers, let me know that someone stole something from him back in Apollo’s Well and he wants to go back to recover it. He promises to see us in Sparta.
We hear gunshots as we ride in, so I ride up to the ship’s bow and open my brain seeking answers to what has changed since we were last in Sparta. There is an emaciated dudes in aisle 4 pushing a mop. Another dude in aisle 7 is pulling everything off the shelves into his cart. People are killing each other at the seafood counter. I grab a pack of toilet paper and head for the checkout.
I lead SPD into the Tumble and see a little girl blowing away raiders. We blow away two others that were sneaking up on her. Riding past, I yell up to her, “First round’s on you!!!” as we roar past. I recognize Violetta Absinth on top of the container, an orphan from a settlement that we hit by raiders. We killed the raiders and left in good terms.
I notice that half the gang isn’t with us anymore, so I stop to see what’s happening. Leroy Brown hits me with a pipe wrench on his way past and I’m unconscious. I come to with Violetta standing over me and Grey Rat’s hands on my forehead. I realize that the SPD has been holding me back and now I’m free of them.
Graveyard Train - Tall Dark Shadow I walk to the Jukebox with Violetta. The beer burns my gums, but it’s better than the pain in my head. I pull a guitar off the wall and start plucking the strings while I tell her about the goo, the tanker truck, and the kid no face.
Later, I’m looting and I hear a beating. I enter the maelstrom and I’m shopping. I hear a constant sound. It’s like a heartbeat with a back beat playing over a loudspeaker. It draws me toward the front of the container where I watch the sunrise.
BareNaked Ladies - One Week We go out into the desert while Spoon makes some kind of vehicle for Violetta. I ask Grey Rat about the pain in my gums, but he doesn’t know how to cure it. He calls it the Fix and there’s no known cure.
The next morning, there are four manikins in lawn chairs watching our camp. One has a beer. There are no footprints. Grey Rat goes to talk with them and comes back to tell us that we need to go. Spoon needs two more days for his project. Grey Rat wins the argument and they pack up. I’m ready to roll when Violetta goes up in the gyro to scout out the area.
Grey Rat’s Secret - SPD got their name when we raided a settlement that was re-enacting an ancient ritual called “The Prom.” We kicked in the doors of the gathering hall. “Mind if we dance with your dates?” I’ll never forget what Mrs. Johnson did for me under the bleachers that night…
Fifi runs into trouble and gunfire fills the night. Violetta is spotting for her, pointing out targets. Ace is looting. I’m sitting on top of a rise. The only light is from campfires and burning motorcycles. I pull out my guitar and find the rhythm, the same beat that I’ve been hearing. It’s a reggae kind of vibe with Fifi’s assault rifle playing counterpoint to the world’s heartbeat.
Fifi says that we have to go get Spoonman. I’m feeling a lot of stress but I remember that Spoon rescued me from Bailey Blue, so I volunteer to lead the groundforce. Violetta and Fifi go in with the gyrocopter. She clears the deck and go below decks.
Ace leads the ground party in. No one is there. Ace sees a guy and wastes him. “Slime, slime, slime,” he shouts pointing out the smear the corpse left on the wall. We continue through the labyrinth. Then we hear a gawd-awful noise and Ace runs to the noise.
I’m in the maelstrom and I hear “Clean up in Aisle 5.” The emaciated dude shows up and starts mopping me up. I’m the mess. Time to exit stage left.
Grey Rat gives me the double tap. I’m dead.
