We’re running away from the wreck of the Dauntless in the direction of Apollo’s Well. Blondie is on Fifi’s bike. We’re 3 days into the desert when we’re in a running gun battle with the bikers of the Datsun Cannibals when Grey Rat’s ride throws a rod. We see him get ejected from the vehicle, so I head over to see what happened, followed by the DC.

I ride in hard, spot the Rat, and do some rodeo rider trick to sling him up on the bitch seat behind me. He’s trying to hold on when I hit the gas and outrun the DC. I feel Grey Rat hold me tight. There’s an itch behind my eyes and I whisper, “I’m not as famous as I should be” for absolutely no reason. (GR Deep Brain Scan)

I’d been to Apollo’s Well before. It’s a craptastic shithole welded to the side of a mountain 2,000 feet above us, clustered around the peak like ancient collonaded ruins. Between us and the ruins is the settlement of shanties, a favela in the desert. And we know that it doesn’t have any water.

We make it to Apollo’s Well right about the same time as Ace. Fifi’s pretty messed up. Grey Rat does what he can and she wakes up. Blondie expresses disappointment that she has to give all of Fifi’s stuff back and Ace sucker punches her. Me and the rest of SPD stand around to watch them grapple. She’s got her sword out, but he grabs her wrists. She can’t cut him but he can’t let go. Mary takes a seat and others just watch.

Ace comes away with a handful of hair and a glancing hook. Blondie spits a tooth at him and tells him he’d better watch himself before walking away. Fifi comes up and thanks her for watching the bike. Blondie’s suspicious, without a ride, and still pissed about walking away without Ace’s balls. Fifi lets her keep the bike.

We’re riding into the settlement when we pass a guy selling vehicles. Fifi slips him some ammo and gets a new ride. We see two caravans of people leave the town while we window shop for vehicles.

I make the gang turn out their pockets to collect the scratch to get through the day. We hear Ace’s tagline, “Hey, you motherfucker! Stop right there!” The guy’s name is Badge and he’s pissed. He’s also the head of the settlement’s guard force. He’s got a personal grudge against Ace but I figure that he’d come with me if I can make him a better deal than staying here.

I speak to the masses and convince them to join SPD and ride out with me. Badge is one of the 21 that join, but his intense loyalty will cause problems. I recognize them as Emerson, Lake, and Palmer who had deserted SPD back in the Tumbles. I don’t make anything of it and tell them to get on their bikes. We’ll deal with that when we have time. I’m back to a medium gang
