The Officer's Wardroom is a large, well-appointed common area where commissioned and warrant officers gather to dine, discuss matters of ship's business, and take their leisure. Attended by the Wardroom Steward and a number of cooks and servants, the wardroom contains the officer's formal mess, a bar, and a lounge area with numerous entertainment options according to the tastes and wealth of the officers.
Wardrooms tend to have strict rules governing dining and social etiquette. Subjects traditionally considered taboo in the wardroom are politics and ladies, but there may be other forbidden topics depending on the nature of the ship and her crew. Discussing ship's business or "talking shop" is often frowned upon, especially when guests are in attendance, and performing work or meeting with subordinates is also considered inappropriate or boorish.
The ship's First Lieutenant or Executive Officer is typically the mess president, and is in charge of planning meals for holidays and celebrations, as well as inviting and entertaining any guests. The ship's captain is not a member of the wardroom, having his own private chambers and dining cabin, but is often invited to dine with his officers as a show of respect.
