Acceptable Losses

Game log for the 2016/05/01 session of Apocalypse World: Purgatoria After Dark, as taken by Jason

When the world began to collapse, we held out hope for most of a year, before it became obvious that nothing was going to work.

Babushka puts Natalya in cryo in the hopes that she can eventually be revived.

General Konstantine orders the operation to retrieve the Archduke to go forward that night. Tatiana Gregorieva approaches Nastia and shows her some weapon retention drills.

Babushka returns to the workroom to help Adrian build his jammer. As they work, she explains her maintenance needs to him. He hadn't realized she was not a human, so this conversation comes as something of a surprise. He examines her and determines that the learning engine in this device has exceeded the original bounds of its programming in a fashion that cannot be corrected, and now it's a bit of a murderbot.

Nastia goes to check out the situation before the raid and is almost immediately forced to kill a guard. The situation might normally call for an abort, but the General's feeling a bit of go fever. Nastia decides to create a diversion, since she can't be silent anymore. Gregorieve's Spetznaz team gets to the wall before coming under fire, and Konstantine immediately begins to lay down cover fire. Nastia moves her feral youths into the building to sneak up on the balcony from whence the guards are shooting at the Spetznaz. Konstantine's armor soaks the return fire, but Nastia's gang get pinned down by fire inside the building.

Nastia orders an assault into the fire, but the enemy troops' superior discipline means her team runs into a hail of fire and cannot advance. Some of the team take some wounds and Nastia herself takes a burst square in the chest, knocking her down the stairs and into unconsciousness. Konstantine takes advantage of the distraction created inside the building to run across the street and toss a grenade, eliminating the guards on the balcony. He hears comm chatter ordering all troops to back up as a Vickers gun opens up inside the building. He moves to flank the gun, moving his team quickly along the building perimeter to breach one of the large windows and coming in a different path. As they run the perimeter, they get strung out, and have to regroup and stack up before they can breach the wall, losing a tick.

Konstantine team goes into a mad minute to buy the time to regroup, which buys them a little time. Konstantine, ice cold, gives the breach order and catches the enemy by surprise, eliminating the Vickers as an effective unit. The newly united assault force has made it to the Residence, and sees the guards trading fire with someone inside. Since time is of the essence, the General's troops push the assault, breaking through into the Residence. Konstantine notices that Lt Gregorieva is killing all the wounded, without any specific order to do so.

Nastia, unconscious, enters the psychic maelstrom in search of someone who can help her be a consumate badass like Gregorieva. She finds Gleb, who advises her to keep Jinty in line.

Konstantine orders whoever's in the Archduke's apartment to surrender, and the cold rage in his voice scares the shit out of the guards. They surrender and promptly get murdered by Gregorieva. Konstantine introduces himself briefly, tells the Archduke that it's time to go, and then everybody beats feet. On the way out, the Archduke provides the General with a lengthy deathlist. We also free His Excellency's entourage, of course, which includes a young lady named Violetta. They flee through the tunnels and arrive back at Stasis. Hey Violetta, it's Adrian!

She immediately jumps to the wrong conclusion and assumes that the people in Stasis kidnapped Adrian and are holding them prisoner. It takes a few minutes for them to get reacquainted and up to speed. Then she notices that Babushka seems a litle odd and tries to figure her out. She cannot figure Babushka out. She starts trying to make sense out of her military jumpsuit, from a practical fashion point of view, and she also asks how she can help with Adrian's bit of techno-surgery. She ends up acting as sort of a nurse in all this, and Adrian manages to successfully render the device inert. Freeeeedom! Violetta offers to try to help Adrian (still thinking he's a captive) but he just wants to rest. She details Constanc and Beauregard to guard Adrian. Babushka gives all of them her warning speech.

The Archduke immediately begins interrogating the General about the situation. Eventually the Archuke asks the General to clear the Situation Room so they can speak privately. The Archduke wants to approach potential loyalists in the military and see if they cannot be turned to his side. Sounds good, right? Then the Archduke tells the General that the Archduchess needs to die so that he can marry their heir of Aerolith Kursk. Yeah. That's something the General needs to ponder.

Violetta and Babushka have some getting-to-know-you talk. Violetta says some disloyal thinks about the Archduke but doesn't seem like a bad person. Babushka decides that she needs to deepen her understanding of human politics, so she opens her brain. Robots suck at the Maelstrom! She immediately encounters the General, who really objects to the way Babushka punched him to death. When Nastia comes in to check on her, Babushka's twitching and convulsing. The human decides not to mess with the robot and just sits back to watch it all happen. When she wakes and they make some small talk, Babushka asks Nastia to let her know if the General asks her to do any favors.

Konstantine summons Nastia to join him and the Archduke in the Situation Room. Konstantine tries to feel out the Archduke about his political plans, looking for something we can advertise to gain popular support. Sadly the Archduke gives no fucks about popular support and refuses to commit to anything. He doesn't even grasp the idea that popular support might be relevant to his life.
