Ransom & Riot

Game log for the 2013/05/23 session of 7th Sea: The Search for Salvation, as taken by Jason

Amordi, 10 Nonus

Felix and Léon go looking for the wine bottle full of magic needles. Léon asks about the chances of the Inquisitors double-crossing us, but Felix doubts the odds. They find the bottle and start heading for the ship.

Nikolai and Mercede Panebianchi di Vestini talk about her kidnapping. She was yanked during a trip to the marketplace, which is good insofar as it means they didn't raid the house. The kids are safe, so far as anyone knows. During her captivity, she heard something about finding a witch. Nikolai admits to being glad she's there, much as he regrets the circumstances.

On the ship, a surgeon works on Gabriel. They've taken Alonso below decks for treatment. The High Inquisitor expresses a hope that Benito's friends will return with the needle shortly.

Reginald goes to find Janisse. On the way, he spies a pair of Musketeers, leaning against a fountain, talking amongst themselves. On a whim, he mentions that he heard the sound of fighting near the docks, and someone yelling about the Inquisition. "Mon dieu!" One of them runs off to report it, and the other one requires Reginald to show him to the spot where the alleged fray took place. Since Léon and Felix have to try to avoid attention, the Musketeers show up just as they're at the end of the dock. Reginald recognizes his friends and tries to suggest that it might have been the next ship down, just to buy a little time.

It works, because we board the ship, hand off the needle in a bottle, and attemt to be on our merry, with the Inquisitors promising to send an agent to the soup kitchen. Then the Musketeers arrive! The Musketeers ask us about fighting, singling out Felix since he wears a duelist's pin. Of course, he speaks no Montaigne. Benito tells them it was a legal duel. They ask him not to fight at night inside the city limits anymore and move on. Reginald follows them out, so as to continue the facade that he doesn't know us. We make our own way home, Reginald having mysteriously vanished.

Meanwhile, Nikolai and Mercede pass some time together. Nikolai feels like they've grown closer. Hah hah, you're boffing a Fate Witch!

Reginald finds Janisse Rambeaux at the Explorer's Society. He fills her in on our adventures.

Back at the house, Benito explains that he's made a deal, and the Inquisition will aid our struggle for social justice. Mercede comes over to us, unveiled, and thanks us for saving her. She actually touches all of us, which by Vodacce standards of Fate Witch conduct would be way far gone out there. Léon uses Porté magic to pass a message back to his family, letting them know that Mercede is safe.

Reginald and Janisse show up. Janisse mutters in Montaigne as she stiches Felix up, more in haste than in care. Benito asks Reginald why he brought the Musketeers. Reginald explains that he thought we'd be long gone when they arrived, and what the Musketeers do with the Inquisitors is someone else's problem. He's not super-pleased to hear that we're working with them now.

Janisse's stitching gets rid of all Felix's dramatic wounds. They have a bit of a fight about Felix's destructive ways.

Nikolai explains our social justice plan to Mercede. He also mentions that he trusts Benito as he trusted her father, just to bait fate (lowercase) a little bit. He also mentions that Panebianchi's men are in town.

We sleep and then comes morning, Amordi, 10 Nonus.

Léon gets a Porte message at breakfast. Nothing like a little biscuit, egg, and traumatic violation of the universe to get you moving in the morning.

Reginald goes looking for his grandmother.

Felix and Nikolai go wandering about town. Official purpose: see it on the ground and refine our plan for ambushing the Lightning Guard. Secret purpose: maybe we'll see Mia, or get a clue about her whereabouts.

Léon and Benito go to the Musketeer barracks to seek out Andre Leveque. They have to wait for an hour or so to see him, but eventually he comes out and greets them. To get some privacy, they head down to the dungeons, where Léon asks him, without mentioning the family connection, to look into his father's case.

Reginald's grandmother, also known as Lady Dulcet, acknowledges that the men who were looking for her yesterday made quite a mess.

Nikolai and Felix look at the street layouy and decide that hiding stakes in the crowd would make it eminently possible to ambush the Lightning Guard.

Benito meets with some people to talk conspiracy. Sadly I missed the beginning of the conversation due to biological necessity.

Two weeks pass. Stuff that happens:

  • Reginald gets a scroll in a language he's never seen before. He can't read it, though it comes with a note from his grandmother saying it should be helpful to him.
  • Léon gets a visitor who tells him the musketeer who handled his father's trial will be in town in ten days, about 27 Nonus.
  • Felix and Nikolai recruit and train
  • Nobody spots a Panebianchi agent or Mia
  • The Inquisition ask Benito what he needs
  • There's been a battle at Salzeph in Montaigne, in which Montague was defeated by Fauner Posen. Montague is a prisoner of war. 70,000 men walked in, 7000 were taken, the remainder are a defeated rabble.
  • The news of the defeat caused a small riot in front of the palace, dispersed again by the Lightning Guard.

Amordi, 25 Nonus (Yes, we just skipped ahead two weeks.)

Benito is on his way to the salon, when he spies a crowd near a gate. People seem to be congregating around the gate, and some of them are shouting. Apparently there's been another example of "justice", a man in an army uniform who's going to be executed for stopping a noble man from beating a woman.

Benito hurries to the salon. Hubert is upset - L'Empereur wouldn't see him. He's even more upset to hear of the riot that looks set to start and runs off. Benito grabs a page and asks him to tell the other members of the salon that he and Hubert have gone to stop a hanging, then runs after his comrade. He grabs the nearest urchin and asks him to run and fetch Reginald, then a second to the soup kitchen, and a third to run to the butcher's house to get the rest of the party.

Hubert throws a rock at one of the guards on the wagon and KOs him. Other people copy him. A Musketeer gets pushed down and run over. Benito goes looking for the jailer to try to free the doomed soldier, but the jailer is busy clubbing people and can't be talked to. Benito draws steel. The Musketeers are using bayonets. Benito uses his blade to slice the keys from the jailer's belt and begins to free the soldier. He gets away with it and that poor dude is gone. Hubert begins yelling "Justice has come at last! For Montaigne! For the people!"

The urchin arrives and Reginald gets the message that Benito needs him at the gallows. Same at the soup kitchen and at the house. Felix and Nikolai summon their mates in case this is it.

At the salon, Hubert is sobbing. The other members want to talk upstairs. Keep it casual, folks! Henri announces that he knows what needs to be done and walks out the door. He writes a letter, writes an address on it, and tells Benito to deliver to anyone at that address. It says "the sun has come out."

At the gallows, we realize that the riot never made it there. Nikolai, Léon, and Felix rush to find their men and get them deployed.

Within a couple hours, looting and fires have broken out. Shots have been fired. In three hours, it's bedlam. After Benito delivers his message, he sees several people with muskets leaving the flat. He then goes to get Daria out of the hotel and into someplace safe, like a slaughterhouse.

Reginald gets to the Explorer's Society and finds the Shield Men out in front with bared steel. Emmanuelle Aubois and Janisse ask for an explanation of what's going on, so Reginald quickly fills them in, then shows them the scroll that Grandma sent. They can't get over the implausibility of the riot, and Reginald loses his temper a bit and schools them about what a horrible, horrible place the city has become. Sadly nobody around the Society has any idea what the scroll is, so he goes to the stacks to see if he can find something similar.

Benito gets there and tells them he works for Reginald. They don't let him in, but they send for Reginald to approve or disapprove. Reggie approves, and when Léon arrives, Benito claims that they both work for Reginald and should be allowed in. Fine! Reginald explains that he has a scroll that should help with the sphere, except he can't read it. The next step is to get to Henri Leveque, who might be able to read it, but that means either going through the sewers (balls dangerous) or through the palace (depends on wholesale riot success).

Janisse says she's going to the slaughterhouse.
