Drunks and Procurers
Game log for the 2011/09/01 session of 7th Sea: The Search for Salvation, as taken by Jason
Soldi, Septimus 1, 1668, a warm, sunny day on the island of Dionna.
Mahmoud is at La Villa Calabretta, chasing after Daria when her mother isn't watching.
Leon and Benito stay at the same house, and of them all, Benito has the best luck with Daria.
Mercenaries Felix Vogel and Nikolai Zolikoff have also obtained lodging with the Calabrettas. Nikolai works for Benito and Felix works for Leon, an arrangement that has been working out well so far.
Last night's feast left the household exhausted and slow to rise. Nikolai decides to leave the house and reacquire the path of Evelina Venzini di Sigillo, which means a lot of chasing rumours about town. Before long, the entire party has decided to come along. Mahmoud insists that we all consume coffee before departing.
The docks are very busy this time of year, as the sailors and dockhands try to get as many journeys in before the change of seasons. Despite our best socializing, we fail to turn up any word of anyone matching Evelina's description. As the nobles depart our company to go to church, Mahmoud seeks out a Crescent sailor in hopes of finding a lead to the local underground slave trade, but can't really get an in. Felix finds a Vendel first mate, Olabi, whose captain likes the ladies and knows who to talk to. Felix suggests going where he goes and talking to someone who's made women his profession.
We find ourselves at a villa, with guardsmen out front. We tell them we seek Captain Oskar Salo. Upon hearing that we have no appointment, they show consternation, and explain that the captain is too busy, but could see us soon. We surrender our weapons to the guards. Nikolai expresses concern that someone should watch the back; Mahmoud says some words in Crescent over his blade as he surrenders it, which gives the guard pause. Benito causes a bit of a fuss when he refuses to hand over his Soldano rapier. Nikolai tries to chat up the servants, but has no luck. 40 minutes later, the butler tells us the Captain will see us now. Nikolai decides to wait outside, and Mahmoud waits with him. The butler leads the rest of us through more hallways, very well decorated, into the kitchen.
We find the Captain seated at a big kitchen table. He's a big, bearded guy with tatoos around his shoulders. Benito asks him whether he knows anyone who procures women; he replies that he knows many people who do so, but most prefer to be kept. We fill him in on Evelina's particulars, but eventually he says that he knows her not, but could help us seek her. He assures his services are "very good." Felix gives him the Leia Promise: the reward will be more than he can imagine.
We find Mahmoud and Nikolai, reclaim our weapons, and depart. The nobles go to church, and the rest of us wander the town, hoping it's our lucky day.
Leon bumps into Luc Durand and his wife Arienne Durand, and discuss Montaigne things. The war in Castille is still a bloody meatgrinder. They invite him to a fete the next weekend.
We dine. Later that night, Captain Salo does arrive. Benito summons Felix and Nikolai, one to translate and one in case this goes somewhere. Salo has asked around, and while most of them carry passengers but don't deal in involuntary travel, one of them did carry a pretty Vodacce girl for free. She got off the boat in Vendel. For a fee, he will find out more.
Daria comes to see Leon and starts talking about a handsome, burly guy who came calling. Oh ho! She's a little surprised when Leon abandons her for Salo, but she has vast reserves of self-esteem to fall back on.
Salo agrees to talk to the other Captain, relay our offer, and come back to tell us what he says. Nikolai really wants to go meet the other Captain directly, and Salo eventually agrees to take us right to him. Nikolai goes to grab Mahmoud. 25 guilders later, everyone's happy. We all head back down to the waterfront. Salo's acquaintance is a very Montaigne-looking Vendel. Salo introduces us. They exchange foreigner jokes. The new guy introduces himself as Michael. Michael speaks fluent Vodacce and asks how he can help us. Benito relays our long, sad, tale of Evelina woe. His girl called herself Suzannah, which is not a di Sigillo family name or other obvious giveaway. Nikolai asks Leon who would have dealt with passengers; Leon asks if we can speak to the purser, but the purser isn't on the boat right now. Perhaps we could come back tomorrow morning. Michael sends Thomas to go with us to look for Henry. It takes us a couple hours to find our guy, and when we do, he's dicing and drinking, but not incapacitated. Nikolai explains the nature of our quest. Sadly, he doesn't remember any sort of scar, and he does remember she got off in Vendel, so this is not a promising lead. We then dice and drink and gamble a bit.
