Essential Components

Lathe-pattern 2s Sprint Trader Drive, Strelov 1 Warp Engine, Gellar Field, Single Void Shield Array, Ship Master's Bridge, Vitae Pattern Life Sustainer, Voidsmen Quarters, Mark-201.b Auger Array.

Supplemental Components

  • Compartmentalized Cargo Holds: Instead of one large cargo hold, Calamity has a number of smaller holds placed strategically throughout her hull to spread out her load and help her handling. This component adds 100 Achievement Points toward any Trade Objective.
  • Augmented Retro-thrusters: Calamity is one of the more agile ships in the Machariel fleet, thanks largely in part to these supercharged thrusters.
  • Shadowblind Bays: A holdover from her piracy days, Calamity has squirreled away in different parts of the ship hidden holds of varying sizes that are void-shielded and static screened to make them virtually invisible to auspex systems. This component grants and additional 50 Achievement Points to any Trade Objective, and 75 Achievement Points Toward any Criminal Objective. Due to their placement and obfuscation systems, locating these holds requires an Arduous (-40) Scrutiny Test.
  • Empyrean Mantle: A sophisticated bit of gear from the dark age of technology, the Empyrean Mantle uses a series of energy baffles, auspex and augur absorbing paintwork, and other arcane tricks to make the ship essentially invisible when needs be. When travelling on Silent Running, all Tests made to detect Calamity have their difficulty increased by two degrees. This component also adds and additional 50 Achievement Points toward any Criminal Objectives.

Complications

Reaver of the Unbeholden Reaches

  • Self-reliant: When Calamity's crew affects long-term repairs, they repair 1d10+5 points of hull integrity as opposed to the standard 1d5.
  • Strike and Fade: All Silent Running manoeuvres Calamity performs gain a +10 bonus. This stacks with the bonuses granted by the Empyrean Mantle.
  • Pirate Vessel: Like her consort Mendicant, Calamity has a chequered past, and many old voidmen and Rogue Traders still carry a grudge against her. On a successful Difficult (-10) Scrutiny Test, experienced voidmen and Naval officers will recognise her despite her Machariel livery and new running gear, and will be, rightfully or not, suspicious of her and her crew. All officers and crew hailing from Calamity suffer -10 on all interaction tests if the person or persons they are interacting with recognize the ship.

Calamity, and her sister ship Mayhem, were laid down at Forgeworld Voss Drive Yards less than five hundred years ago. Their histories are largely unknown, as are the histories of many pirate vessels, due to the number of owners they've had and the numerous names under which they've operated. Recently they served as consorts for the Star Clipper Black Dahlia, raiding trade and Navy convoys on both sides of the Maw. When Dahlia was taken as a prize and renamed Mendicant, Calamity and Mayhem went with her. These three ships make up the core of the fast transport and courier service fielded by House Machariel. Calamity is currently under command of Faye Tarvanna, a minor noble whose family is allied with House Machariel, and they are on station in the Expanse giving support to Marneus Machariel.
