Boatswains (pronounced bo-sun) of the Imperial Navy, and of those private and merchant navies modeled after that august institution, are the heads of a ship's Deck Department. They are Warrant Officers who wield substantial power aboard a ship, and thanks to their rank and status they receive a larger salary, a larger share of prize money, and are entitled to eat in the Officer's Ward Room. Ships have only one Boatswain embarked, no matter the size of the crew.
