Void Born - Born the son of a soldier aboard a Machariel ship, Tan (like the color) rubbed elbows with one of the Rogue Trader's kids (Marneus) as a boy.
Stubjack - Tan's father expected him to enlist in the ship's guard corps when he reached young adulthood, but Tan felt he could make a better life for himself as a mercenary. At an opportune stop at a port in orbit above a world in conflict, Tan left his home and sought his fortune dirtside.
Tainted (Wyrdling) - He wasn't dirtside long before his latent psychic abilities manifested. In a battle with his mercenary company, his bolter jammed, and it seemed he would be killed, but suddenly he lashed out with a bolt of telekinetic force and killed his attacker. Soon after this revelation, Tan was turned in to the Inquisition by his unit's captain, and he was imprisoned on a Blackship and sent to Holy Terra to be measured. To his surprise and delight (though he would tell you he knew it all along), he was not immediately sacrificed, but rather underwent preparations for the ritual of Soul Binding.
The Hand of War - After surviving his encounter with the Emperor mostly intact, Tan was sent back into space as a novice astropath aboard the Medway. After a few months of relatively smooth sailing, the ship was attacked by pirates, and Tan's experience as a mercenary was put to use in the defense against boarding actions. He was able to summon help from a nearby Imperial Navy cruiser before the ship was destroyed, and managed to survive along with Victrus and Bors. Unfortunately, a young woman he had been involved with was captured and used for sport by the pirates before the navy drove them off, and Tan's hatred for their ilk still smolders.
Fortune - Tan remains rather mercenary in his values.
Astropath Transcendant - Though now exploring his psychic abilities in the service of the Imperium, Tan's bent remains rather more martial than most astropaths.
