Cows & Bears & Cows
Game log for the 2013/09/26 session of Brittania World, as taken by Jacko
Bran had to make some tough decisions concerning the newly rustled cattle, getting into an argument with Caddog and having to resort to threats of violence to get the party moving. He was able to convince Caddog of the merits of being quiet and doing what you're told. They made great time and would make it back to town the next day.
Senica returned to Caerlegion with Elbin, the emissary from Cissa, and introduced him to Exuperata before excusing herself. Nouanti cornered Senica as she was leaving the great hall and asked who the newcomer was and his purpose here. He seemed paranoid that the Cissans might be up to something but Senica dismissed him with an insult and walked away.
Bran made sure his crew knew the story about these new cows; They were found in the woods. Caddog wanted to know why they couldn't brag about a cattle raid. Who cares if they murdered a few people? Bran tried to keep things cool and convinced them to stick to the story. Senica and Corr met him at the gate and asked how things went after Nouanti ordered his men to rustle the cattle.
The three retired to the tavern for a drink and a seat near the fire. They spoke about Cissa and their situation, considering what they had to offer and what it would take to gain some benefit from them. They spoke on the ghost legion, with Corr sharing his experience while Bran listened and Senica tried to ignore him.
Villagers questioned Corr about the ghost legionnaires and what he was going to do about them. He propositioned that perhaps they needed a proper burial. Senica mentioned the cache of old Roman weapons they found in the northwest and the old battlefield down south as possible places to check out.
The trio also heard rumors that there were some bad dudes landing in the north and committing some pretty heinous atrocities against villages there. They were hopeful that the raiders would take what they wanted and then leave, as that's the way of raiders. They decide to head out to the old weapons cache location.
They take a good look around the woods where they found the cache. While the cache was fairly well concealed, no one could really reason why anyone would just bury them but there were a few fair theories. They did find a nearby cave and Bran and Senica decided to check it out.
Senica went forward with a sword, a torch and a safety rope tied around her waist and handed to Bran. She entered a fissure and found a lot of bones underfoot. Like, a lot. It smelled like rotting meat, fur and bears down there! Bran began pulling at Senicas insistence and they decided to run for it. Corr grabbed Senicas spear from her horse while the others scrambled out of the cave.
Senica traded her sword for her spear with Corr while trying to scramble onto her horse. Bran lunged at it to distract the bear and it turned on Corr. Corr went down with a swipe from the bear. Bran ran in to viciously slash one of the bears arms off while Senica mounted her horse and charged, driving her spear into the animals chest.
Corr and Senica rode back to Caerlegion though there were some problems getting Corr to be cooperative. Bran stayed behind to dress down the bear and gather up it's skin and meat. The injured Corr inadvertently gathered a following on the way to Amb the midwife. Corrr is happy to pay for the remedy while Senica and Amb argue about the method of payment. Senica leaves to go find Bran out in the woods.
The two meet up in the rainy darkness and head back to Caerlegion on foot, Bran carrying the new bear parts and they roll in near dawn. Senica drops the bear meat with the butcher and everyone rests.
Elbin from Cissa is pretty impressed with the town and is hopeful for relations. Senica is tasked with escorting him back to Cissa. She and Bran head out for the ride with plans to visit the old battlefield after. They're attacked by bandits along the way but the battle is decidedly one-sided as the bandits are set upon by the gang. Bran took an arrow and was bowled over in the confusion, sustaining a few wounds.
Elbin is a little shocked at the murderous rampage and stays quiet the rest of the ride to Cissa. They have an uneventful trip there and the news of the bandits getting wiped out seems to have disturbed the lord of Cissa. Senica dismisses them as weak milk-drinkers. The Cearlegionnaires have a quiet night and head to the battlefield the next day.
Corr visited Totia and gave her private services, as promised, though he was still recovering from his bear wounds. He was visited, later by Dubnus, one of the teenaged troublemakers inhabiting the village. He and his friends were by the ghost legion road and daring each other to get close to it when one of them slashed his arm with a ghostly sword. Dubnus' arm was livid and cold to the touch where the blade touched it and the bone was broken. Corr opened his mind to the spirits and sought their help.
Almost instantly, the wound seemed to become more normal for a broken bone. He washed the wound with sacred spring water and bound it in ivy. The spirits be praised!
Senica and Bran stopped by the old battleground and took a look around at things, finding old bones and scraps of worthless armor or weapons. Scavengers had picked things clean over the years. Senica had a sudden vision of the impending doom and fog began flowing from her, spooking out Bran quite a bit! He manages to snap her out of it and she asks to leave right away and insists they don't talk about this. They do so. Elsewhere, Corr feels like something bad happened.
Senica and Bran arrive back into town, the horsewoman visibly shaken by the experience. She decided to grab a few bottles of wine for distraction before thinking of grabbing Bran for a quick tumble as even more distraction before drinking herself asleep.
During the night, some rustlers snuck into the cattle pen and tried to make off with a few of our cows! Bran organized a defense but the lead was too great and the cattle were well and truly gone before any significant might could be brought down on them. You win some, you lose some.
