Of all the planets in Hew that have conditions amenable for life as we know it, only one is worth visiting and it's the one without anyone on it. Gem is a planet of vibrant seas and lush, untouched ground that's been fought over for nearly half a millenia now. Seperate socities formed on Ram and Tho, other planets that have since been turned nearly inhospitable by unchecked industry and overpopulation run rampant. Though barely capable of spaceflight, the Ramites and the Thovians have insured that the other will not be able to significantly exploit Gem with ceaseless interplanetary warfare. A primitive slug thrower that's big enough will breach a hull just fine and significant numbers of each civilization have spread through the cluster as bodyguards, mercenaries and criminals.

Hew is a fucking warzone and it's no secret. Nepenthe and Loire had better watch their asses. If the Ramites or Thovians ever put actual slipstreaming armadas together (instead of the individual/small group pirates they've got now), they'd be unto a plague of locusts.
