Felix Vogel is a character in 7th Sea: The Search for Salvation, played by Zorak.

Biography

Felix Vogel comes from solid gentleman stock in the Eisen town of Freiburg, and took a thorough course of study in Eisen's military academies, including a grounding in the basics of the Drexel school of zweihander fighting. One may speculate whether Felix chose the zweihander because of his large stature, or grew so bulky because he spent his adolescence learning to maneuver a six-foot-long sword with grace, speed, and precision. Whatever conclusion one draws, the fact remains that Felix makes an impressive physical specimen.

If his height and brawn did not make strangers nervous, his dour mien would. He habitually wears a slight frown, and tends to fix on a person or thing to stare at, fully evaluate it, and then move on without hesitation. People can tell that they have been weighed, and his dour look makes them feel they have may been found wanting. To this forbidding air, add Felix's dark eyes, black hair, and full mustache and beard, and indulge a metaphor from another century: In uncertain situations, Felix is a black hole, taking in all around, but yielding nothing.

When surrounded only by those he trusts, Felix reveals an entirely different side to his personality. He laughs easily, though his humor tends toward the cynical. He rarely has money, because when he has it, he does not hesitate to loan it to his friends. Despite his youth, he acts as the old man of the bunch, pointing out the risks others have not considered and the horrible fate awaiting those who take too many chances. Having inevitably failed to persuade his friends of the value of a quiet night in, he then follows them out into trouble, firmly believing that they would be lost without someone to keep an eye on them.

Aside from his native Eisen, he speaks Vodacce without accent, and can converse in Avalon and Vendel as well. He dresses and acts like a Vodacce and in all ways prefers Vodacce culture to his own, insisting that the culture of his homeland represents only a pleasant veneer over a land of foggy, cold, monster-ridden forests and a race of lordlings who seem proud of their holdings in inverse proportion to the health of their people.

Twenty Questions

  1. What country is your Hero from? Eisen, the city of Freiburg.
  2. How would you physically describe your Hero? 5'10", stocky, pale-skinned, but with thick, curly, black hair. He wears a full beard and mustache, though he keeps them neatly trimmed, and they make his facial expressions difficult to read. He wears functional clothing but, being often broke, has his garb mended somewhat after he needs to and replaced even later than that. He never quite sinks down to looking shabby, according to his own notions of fashion. Those with strong opinions about fashion might disagree - but then, they can afford to.
  3. Does your Hero have recurring mannerisms? Felix tends toward an exaggerated stillness rather than any twitches or gestures.
  4. What is your Hero’s main motivation? Felix enjoys the life of a professional soldier and has no great aspirations toward anything more... he says. He's on a path he never expected to walk and has subconsciously narrowed his horizons. He has the potential to be much more but needs something to change his horizons.
  5. What is your Hero’s greatest strength? Greatest weakness? Felix has been extensively trained, and chosen a profession where he can put hat training and his natural gifts to use. He has weakened himself by ignoring the greater picture. If he could step outside his life and read it like a book, he'd say that he had lived his entire adult life tactically instead of strategically.
  6. 6. What are your Hero’s most and least favorite things? Felix loves his idealized vision of Vodacce life: passionate, intricate, based on a rich tradition. He hates his demonized version of Eisen life: tedious, violent, improverished. In particular, he hates the notion of poverty. He himself tends to be peniless, but that's because he lets coin slip through his fingers. For the coin to stop flowing would leave him scared at a visceral level. He also finds the wilderness deeply disturbing. Being in a military camp in a forest is fine; being in a small group in the great forest can make him a little white around the eyes.
  7. What about your Hero’s psychology? Felix loves what he's scared to become. In a very real sense he lives vicariously through his more passionate friends, and hides his own emotions behind deliberation and defenses. Betrayal infuriates him, and romantic love drives him to drown his sorrows in alcohol - though he refuses to discuss those sorrows.
  8. What is your Hero’s single greatest fear? If you asked Felix, he would say "failure," meaning an inability to earn a living by the sword. In truth, however, Felix fears betrayal; not just that he might be betrayed, but that he might be unworthy of loyalty.
  9. What are your Hero’s highest ambitions? His greatest love? While he claims to have no ambitions, Felix would, deep down inside, love to conquer all Eisen, or perform some other feat that would prove his greatness before the world. His refusal to admit to ambition stems in large part from a conviction that he has no particular greatness to prove.
  10. What is your Hero’s opinion of his country? You know how an animal on the edge of death will go someplace isolated to die? Eisen performs that service for Thean culture.
  11. Does your Hero have any prejudices? Patriotic Eisens irritate him, and Vodacce courtesans make him very uneasy. As a lover of Vodacce culture, he finds them incredibly alluring. Having been raised with Eisen prejudices, he also finds them impossible to cope with. He doesn't hate them - he could never hate them - but he avoids them.
  12. Where do your Hero’s loyalties lie? With Nokolai and Mahmoud, and then with his employer, and then with his romantic illusions.
  13. Is your Hero in love? Is he married or betrothed? Not lately, and if you ask him, not ever.
  14. What about your Hero’s family? If I gave all that away, it would kill the drama.
  15. How would your Hero’s parents describe him? "He was such a nice boy, we never expected this from him."
  16. Is your Hero a gentleman or gentlewoman? He'd like to be, but it's not a religion. Felix would die for his comrades and his employers. He would not die because he made a promise he couldn't keep. That code of chivalry stuff is a luxury.
  17. How religious is your Hero? What sect of the Church does he follow? Felix follows Objectionism casually, but figures that since his relationship with Theus is his own, he doesn't need to trouble himself unnecessarily over the trappings of religion. Each man finds his own way to Theus, by whatever name they choose to call him.
  18. Is your Hero a member of a guild, gentleman’s club, or secret society? No.
  19. What does your Hero think of Sorcery? He's had little experience of it and figures it's mostly someone else's problem. If it turns up at work, "frag the mage" remains a timeless piece of wisdom.
  20. If you could, what advice would you give your Hero? You need to learn to let go of the past so you can enjoy the present and plan for the future.
