Caldan of Holk is a character in Harn: Clawing for Power.

Caldan was also known as Caldan One-Eye.

Biography

Caldan of Holk was the third guildmaster for the Kuseme Lia Kavair in less than a year in 720 TR. He earned his nickname after losing an eye to Koral of Geldryss when they were both still journeyman apprentices in the Lia Kavair, creating a blood feud between them. Caldan was believed to have taken control of the guild to wage his personal vendetta against Koral, going so far as to continue to deny tribute to Koral.

Caldan allied himself with Liakos of Malthain in a bid to depose Koral. He wanted more turf under his control and so Liakos promised him control of the Kobar Bridge from both ends and an increased percentage in smuggling operations. Both of these things were nominally the purview of the Thard Lia Kavair but they were allied with Koral and would have to acquiesce or be destroyed if Liakos was successful. Caldan also wanted Liakos' help in assisting the teamsters in their quest to be guilded, his plan centering around a riot when the salt caravans returned to Coranan.

The teamster riots were started the night Koral was assassinated by the Malthain crew. After Liakos took power, Korals decapitated, salted head was delivered to Caldan, who gleefully took his final revenge by scooping out his enemies eyes. Caldan introduced Liakos to Uven of Gelt, the de facto teamster leader and main proponent for their guild aspirations. They pointed him at Tuvoth of Rylen, a senator with strong Morgathian ties who was one of the biggest supporters for the teamsters as it could provide better standard of living for the Morgathian laity. Caldan asked Liakos to spread the word that Uven was under Lia Kavair protection.

Sometime during the night of the 10th, Caldan was fatally stabbed by an unknown assailant in an alley in Kuseme, his death reported by Umis of Gamling to Liakos. His killer is believed to be Yeremor of Hask, either working for himself or for unknown masters, or perhaps Vudrin of Shazik, who was reported to be in Kuseme the night of the murder. However, Vudrin maintained he was asked to go to a safehouse by one of Yeremors apprentices and he left shortly after Yeremor failed to arrive at the safe house.
