Biography
Mahmoud is a tall, broad-shouldered, dashing young man with the lean, muscled frame and effortless grace of an athlete. He is relatively dark skinned, with a full, close cropped black beard, a gleaming bald pate, and honey colored eyes. Day to day he wears clothes considered fashionable in Vodacce, but when wooing a wealthy lady or hobnobbing with local nobility he wears ornate Crescent garb consisting of robes, loose trousers, and highly polished boots. He accents his wardrobe with colorful sashes, head gear, and jewelry in an effort to play the exotic foreigner and put people off their guard.

He is extremely passionate about three things; coffee, women, and his homeland and has very strong opinions about all three subjects. His dedication to coffee and its proper preparation and enjoyment borders on fanatical, and he travels everywhere with his coffee pot, proper beans, and a small silver coffee service with which to entertain his friends. He is also an inveterate rake and infamous whoremonger who leaves a string of dewy-eyed admiring women and furious husbands, fathers, brothers, and uncles wherever he goes. When speaking of home, he has a tendency to go on at length about the wonders of the Crescent Empire and about the fact that in the West "the food is bland, the music is dull, the women are plain, the art is unsophisticated", and the undisputed fact that everything is better back home.

Twenty Questions
*1. What country is your Hero from? Mahmoud hails from the Crescent Empire, where he was born and raised in relative luxury in the grand city of Iskandar.

*2. How would you physically describe your Hero? Mahmoud is a tall, broad-shouldered, dashing young man with the lean, muscled frame and effortless grace of an athlete. He is relatively dark skinned, with a full, close cropped black beard, a gleaming bald pate, and honey colored eyes. Day to day he wears clothes considered fashionable in Vodacce, but when wooing a wealthy lady or hobnobbing with local nobility he wears ornate Crescent garb consisting of robes, loose trousers, and highly polished boots and accents his wardrobe with colorful sashes and jewelry in an effort to play the exotic foreigner and put people off their guard.

*3. Does your Hero have recurring mannerisms? Mahmoud is extremely passionate about three things; coffee, women, and his homeland and has very strong opinions about all three subjects. He is an inveterate rake who leaves a string of dewy-eyed admiring women and furious husbands, fathers, brothers, and uncles wherever he goes. He also has a tendency to speak of the wonders of the Crescent Empire and can and does complain at length how everything is better back home.

*4. What is your Hero’s main motivation? Mahmoud is driven by a lust for life and a desire to see the world and experience all it has to offer.

*5. What is your Hero’s greatest strength? Greatest weakness? Mahmoud's greatest strength is perhaps his prodigious good nature and the ease with which he makes friends. Charming and affable, he is rarely without a smile on his face and is quick with a witty remark or anecdote and is a strong asset in social situations. His greatest weakness is his ardent nature which drives him to recklessly and constantly pursue women, often times to the detriment of himself and others.

*8. What is your Hero’s single greatest fear? Mahmoud is terrified of being constrained, both literally and metaphorically. He would no more willingly enter a dark cave or allow himself to be bound as he would return to Iskandar to be wed and chained to a counting desk for the rest of his life.

*9. What are your Hero’s highest ambitions? His greatest love? Mahmoud thinks little about the future, and even less about the past. He lives firmly in the present, both by necessity and inclination. He wants little more out of life than pleasure and adventure.

*10. What is your Hero’s opinion of his country? Mahmoud dearly loves his homeland, and will take any opportunity to wax poetic about its beautiful lands, ample riches, beautiful women, and unrivaled culture.

*11. Does your Hero have any prejudices? Aside from some lingering tribal prejudices and his distaste for sorcerers, Mahmoud finds that he has no time or energy for prejudice.

*12. Where do your Hero’s loyalties lie? Mahmoud is loyal to himself first and foremost, and to his friends a close second.

*13. Is your Hero in love? Is he married or betrothed? While he claims to be unattached to love all women equally and unconditionally, Mahmoud is, in fact, betrothed to the daughter of a powerful and wealthy merchant house from Iskandar. This was an arranged marriage however, and he is in no hurry to return to his home city and be wed to a homely girl that he barely knows.

*14. What about your Hero’s family? Ibrahim ag Alhabib, which is Mahmoud's real name, was born into a wealthy family of gem merchants in the city of Iskandar. The eldest of ten children, the rest of whom are girls, Mahmoud was raised in the lap of luxury in a sprawling, well furnished and comfortable manor in the Merchants' District. Groomed from a young age to join the family business, he was a constant trial to his parents, Samir and Nuri. He ever took his studies in business or gemology seriously, preferring instead to study fencing and pursue the young and beautiful daughters of his father's business associates.

*15. How would your Hero’s parents describe him? Mahmoud's parents are bitterly disappointed in their son. The act of running out on his arranged marriage and absconding with the dowry has brought nothing but shame to his family, and has damaged his father's business interests in very real and potentially crippling ways. He is not spoken of directly in the house, his father never mentions his name, and his mother silently weeps in her chambers every night over her wayward son.

*16. Is your Hero a gentleman or gentlewoman? Mahmoud is better described with words like rake, cad, and bounder than by the word gentleman. He is trustworthy, however, and considers his word bond for the most part.

*17. How religious is your Hero? What sect of the Church does he follow? Despite his unchecked hedonism and whoremongery, Mahmoud is a deeply spiritual and devout young man. He maintains the strict regimen of prayer, charity, and cleanliness even in the wilds of of Vodacce, is never without his prayer mat and copy of his holy book, and hopes one day to travel to the sacred mountain and become a haci.

Biography
The only man who is unrelated to the rest of the party, Sir Bail is a veteran of the Ramala legion. Originally an enlisted commoner, Sir Bail served with distinction (earning a field commission) during the Kuseme war. Originally intending to be a career officer, Sir Bail was a victim of the political machinations of Marshal Parga of Ostardas and was "discharged" from service prior to mustering out. He does not typically speak of the circumstances behind his discharge. Since leaving the legion Sir Bail has worked as a caravan mercenary, a personal guard, and an ersatz carpenter.
Description
Brother Lysander is an ancient, cantankerous Dreadnought formerly of the Imperial Fists 5th Company. A Technomat by training and inclination, he originally hailed from a long-lost Imperial Forge World in the Gothic Sector that was consumed by a Chaos invasion. He survived his trials and was inducted into the 10th Company Scouts in late M35 where he served with distinction. As a Scout, he exhibited an ability to size up the strengths and weaknesses of enemy positions and fortifications quickly and accurately with the merest glance, as well as a real genius for dealing as much damage as possible to fortifications with as few friendly losses as possible. He rose through the Imperial Fists companies, and was sent to Mars for training as a Techmarine.

It was as a Techmarine in the 5th Company where Brother Lysander served for over two centuries until he was grievously wounded in a long campaign against the hated Iron Warriors. His experience, vast knowledge of siege tactics, and his unique insights were deemed so important to the Chapter that he was honoured with being placed in a Dreadnought so that he could continue to serve. Not long after, he was deployed to the backwater world of Haldr at the very edges of the Imperium to stop an incursion of the Iron Warriors and Thousand Sons traitor legions. On Haldr he lead a doomed stand at the gates of a Mechanicus shrine, was overrun with elements of two long dead Astartes chapters, and was forced to retreat to a previously prepared bunker to regroup. Safe in their bunker, Brother Lysander and four battle-brothers made their plans and healed, only to be buried under a kilometre of rubble by a desperate planetary bombardment by their own forces. It was in this tomb that the five Space Marines lay in stasis for four millennia until they were recently exhumed by forces from House Machariel.

Left at Watch Station Erioch by Marneus Machariel, Brother Lysander was reunited with elements of the Iron Fists operating in the Jericho Reach. He was welcomed by his brothers with open arms, and immediately set about making a new place for himself among these new Marines. Now after being reassigned to the 3rd Company under Brother-Captain Bartel, he has been educating himself about the state of the Imperium, his Chapter, the Koronus Expanse, the Calixis Sector, and any other information he can devour from the Chapter's spacegoing libraria. After much discussion with Brother-Captain Bartel, the 3rd Company has set out to find Marneus Machariel and repay what they see as a debt of honour for returning them their long-lost brother.

Lysander was reunited with his rescuers aboard Machariel Station when the 3rd Company arrived in search of Marneus and the crew of STV Solo Drakban. His hull had been repainted, he was draped in commendations and glory, and Qui irascitur odiet had been painted on each shoulder in High Gothic.
|essential components= Modified Jovian Pattern Class 4 Drive, Strelov 1 Warp Engine, Gellar FIeld, Multiple Void Shield Array, Fleet Support Bridge*, Vitae Pattern Life Sustainer, Voidsmen Quarters, Mark 201.b Augur Array.
*Minstrel's bridge is laid out to improve the efficiency of her officers and bridge crew in providing succor to allied ships. The enhanced cogitator relays, holo-schematic tables, and other accoutrement grant the ship's captain +5 to all Command Tests, and her crew +10 to all Extended Actions taken to repair voidships.
|supplemental components=
*Extended Supply Vaults: These vast holds contain the ship's stores, giving her longer legs and allowing her to stay at void for longer than is usual. This component doubles the time a ship can stay at void without suffering Crew Population or Morale loss, and all Extended Repairs grant an additional 1 point of Hull Integrity.
*Main Cargo Hold (2): Minstrel's main hold is typically packed to the bulkheads with every imaginable ship part as she shuttles to and from various Machariel holdings. When working toward a Trade Objective, this component grants an additional 125 Achievement Points.
*Manufactorum: In her role as a fleet support ship, Minstrel has a small manufactorum aboard to fabricate parts. These small construction facilities are capable of synthesising additional parts required to perform Extended Repairs for a damaged starship. These parts are synthesised from raw materials—generally obtained by mining a nearby asteroid. Manufacturing: If attempting extended repairs, each Manufactorum adds a +10 bonus to the weekly Tech-Use Test. If paying for repairs, each Manufactorum adds a +10 bonus to the Acquisition Test to restore Hull Integrity. Additional Templates: Manufactorums are equipped with a variety of templates for construction, so each Manufactorum adds an additional 10 Achievement Points for any Trade objectives. In addition, the Manufactorums may be able to manufacture small numbers of personal items. The GM is final arbiter of what can and cannot be manufactured, but generally it should not be more than a few dozen of a Common item.
*Salvage Systems: This Component allows a ship to attach itself to vessel which has been reduced to space hulk status. The clamps can strip apart the wreck; for every week spent in salvage the crew may make a Difficult (-10) Tech-Use Test to attempt to safely remove a named Component from the hulk (a Focused Augury Extended Action to scan the wreck is needed to determine Components). If successful, a single working Component can be removed and stored on the host vessel if there is Space for it (or externally secured to hull for towing); if it fails then that Component is lost. Successfully salvaged Components can be sold as part of a constructed Trade Endeavour or even refitted to the ship at a stardock as if it had been acquired normally. Salvage Clamps are gigantic and unwieldy affairs, however, and a vessel equipped with them suffers –5 Manoeuvrability.
*Small Craft Repair Deck: Every launch bay has the capability to perform routine maintenance and basic repairs upon the vessels for which it is used. However, combat vessels are regularly subjected to damage that far exceeds the scope of basic repairs and routine maintenance. Spare Parts: After any starship combat in which fighters, assault boats, or bombers are lost, a character may immediately make a Difficult (–10) Tech Use Test. For every degree of success on the test, two of these craft are recovered.
*Spacedock Piers: Minstrel has a series of extendable slips and docking rings that allow a number of smaller ships to dock with her. When not moving, the huge attachments covering the ship allow up to four smaller vessels to dock. The stationary ship acts as a space station for purposes of making full repairs or replenishing Morale, and grants a +10 to the Acquisition Test when making full repairs. Due to their size, station fittings prevent any weapons with the Broadside rule from being installed (although smaller weapons may still be installed in Port and Starboard weapon capacity slots). When working towards a Trade objective, the Explorers earn an additional +100 Achievement Points towards completing that objective.
Working in the unsettled regions east of Moleryn, freemaster Timberwright Thelmen of Ors takes a high-risk approach to his profession. Preferring to avoid licensing fees for extracting timber, Thelmen instead logs unclaimed wilderness land that falls within the Gozyda tribal range. Still, Thelmen is no fool, hiring mercenaries to accompany his logging crews and always keeping his operations close to the Teb river (which in turn reduces his transport costs). An excellent judge of character, he is a careful planner and does a fair job of anticipating trouble before it arises. Thelmen is a broad-shouldered man with long brown hair and grey eyes. His face usually bears a distracted look and a slight frown, as if he is lost in a vaguely dissatisfying thought

*A suitable space station (we happen to know where there's one lying around)
*Heavy transport ship(s) to tow said station into position in a system of our choosing (Old-Man Machariel has already said we can use House ships to accomplish this when the time comes).
*Manpower and materiel sufficient to repair the station and make it operational. We need to acquire this, although Opitor Castus has already procured a bevy of 100 repair servitors to help with this.
*Manpower sufficient to crew the station once it is operational.
*Trade contracts with nearby systems to keep the station supplied and operational.

Using our wit, verve, augur arrays, and knowledge of local trade routes, we must find and survey a system that will allow us to establish a refueling/staging base that can actually turn a profit.

Achievement Points to Complete:250
Objective 2: Pacifying the Natives
Themes: Military, Criminal, and/or Creed
By hook or by crook, we need to make sure that the locals know that our shiny new starbase is a) here to stay and b) off limits for their grubby graft and corruption. Depending on which system we end up in, there are lots of options left up to our GM. A few suggestions:
*The system is in a good location that sits near several lucrative trade routes. Unfortunately, the pirates think so too. We must ruthlessly blast them to smithereens (Military).
*The system shows promise, but is currently ruled by a thoroughly corrupt Planetary Viceroy who is merely a puppet to the local crime syndicates. The crew must navigate the minefield of shadowy loyalties in order to secure "protection" for the new station. Additionally, we might need to knock enough heads to get our "we are not to be trifled with" point across (Criminal)
*The system is in a good location, but the natives have only recently been brought under the Imperial Yoke and are none too happy about it. The crew needs to "spread the good word" to the locals and convince them of the benefits of bowing to the Emperor's will, or the penalties of failing to do so (Creed, possibly also Military).
Achievement Points to Complete: 350

Objective 3: Fixing the Station
Themes: Exploration and/or Military
Look, we all know that this station has some bad juju, otherwise there wouldn't have been an Orchestrium on board endlessly thumping out litanies. The "routine" repair and refit operation is bound to go horribly awry at some point, requiring the crew to step in, figure out WTF, and destroy whatever rapacious hellspawn or fiendish nasty is haunting the place.
Achievement Points to Complete: 400

Objective 4: Priming the Pump
The sixth planet of the Vanir system, and one of only two habitable planets orbiting that massive blue star, Haldr was, once in the distant past, an outpost of the nascent Imperium of Man. A world composed of cold, incredibly deep seas and scattered archipelagos, its grand, empty cities are actually ancient constructs that float in the vast seas overseen by machine spirits and arcane technology.

Establishing a Machariel Staging/Refueling/Trading Post
Lesser Endeavor, +2 Profit Factor

Requirements:

A suitable space station (we happen to know where there's one lying around)
Heavy transport ship(s) to tow said station into position in a system of our choosing (Old-Man Machariel has already said we can use House ships to accomplish this when the time comes). Manpower and materiel sufficient to repair the station and make it operational. We need to acquire this, although Opitor Castus has already procured a bevy of 100 repair servitors to help with this. Manpower sufficient to crew the station once it is operational. Trade contracts with nearby systems to keep the station supplied and operational.

Objective 1: Find a Suitable Location
Themes: Exploration

Using our wit, verve, augur arrays, and knowledge of local trade routes, we must find and survey a system that will allow us to establish a refueling/staging base that can actually turn a profit.

Achievement Points to Complete:150

Objective 2: Pacifying the Natives
Themes: Military, Criminal, and/or Creed
By hook or by crook, we need to make sure that the locals know that our shiny new starbase is a) here to stay and b) off limits for their grubby graft and corruption. Depending on which system we end up in, there are lots of options left up to our GM. A few suggestions:
The system is in a good location that sits near several lucrative trade routes. Unfortunately, the pirates think so too. We must ruthlessly blast them to smithereens (Military).
The system shows promise, but is currently ruled by a thoroughly corrupt Planetary Viceroy who is merely a puppet to the local crime syndicates. The crew must navigate the minefield of shadowy loyalties in order to secure "protection" for the new station. Additionally, we might need to knock enough heads to get our "we are not to be trifled with" point across (Criminal)
The system is in a good location, but the natives have only recently been brought under the Imperial Yoke and are none too happy about it. The crew needs to "spread the good word" to the locals and convince them of the benefits of bowing to the Emperor's will, or the penalties of failing to do so (Creed, possibly also Military).
Achievement Points to Complete: 300

Objective 3: Fixing the Station

Themes: Exploration and/or Military
Look, we all know that this station has some bad juju, otherwise there wouldn't have been an Orchestrium on board endlessly thumping out litanies. The "routine" repair and refit operation is bound to go horribly awry at some point, requiring the crew to step in, figure out WTF, and destroy whatever rapacious hellspawn or fiendish nasty is haunting the place.
Achievement Points to Complete: 300

Objective 4: Priming the Pump

Themes: Trade

Once the station is up and running, we need to establish standing trade contracts to keep it supplied. This will involve trade negotiations with nearby systems to provide necessities (like food) and/or with labor organizations to work aboard the station to produce goods locally (like Voidborn to refine stuff we found in our survey into useful fuels, raw materials, etc).
Achievement Points to Complete: 150

Total Achievement Points to Complete: 900
